In 1939, Nicholas Winton personally saved the lives of 669 children. Most of them were Jewish — from Czechoslovakia, which was soon to be occupied by the Nazis.
He brought them to Britain and kept it a secret for nearly 50 years. In 2002 Queen Elizabeth II conferred knighthood on Winton.
Winton, now 98 years old, is an immensely compelling symbol of how a caring person can truly make a difference. Click here to see how Sir Nicholas celebrated his birthday.
NEWSThe Michigan Council for Social Studies awarded Charles and Rita Gelman and the Gelman Educational Foundation with the Great Influence Award at their 52nd Annual State Professional Learning Conference.
An article about Nicholas Winton's correspondence with a class of school children in Hillsdale, Michigan made the front page of the Hillsdale Daily News on March 5. Ben Stafford told Denise McCosh's fifth grade class at Gier Elementary School about Sir Nicholas and what he had done, and encouraged them to write to him.
